Will I be covered if my airline goes bust?
All of our policies (with the exception of Globetrotter policies) include Scheduled Airline Failure Insurance (commonly known as SAFI). This protects you if your scheduled airline goes into insolvency, enabling you to book equivalent flight(s) with another airline on a re-imbursement basis up to £5,000 per person named on your policy schedule. This cover is provided on the basis that the prospect of the airline's insolvency was not known at the time of booking your flight or your insurance policy (whichever is the later).

Will I be covered if my tour operator goes bust?
Bankruptcy or liquidation of tour operators or travel agents is not covered under the terms of your policy. This is because most travellers can make a claim under the ATOL scheme via the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) - they can help with reimbursement for your trip, or help to get you home if you are stranded abroad. More information can be found on the ATOL website.

Can I obtain cover for volcanic ash cloud disruptions?
You can choose from one of the following two upgrade options to protect your travel plans against unforeseen occurrences such as volcanic ash cloud disruptions:
- On Silver cover add Volcanic Ash Cover - to cover you for Missed Departure, Travel Delay and Abandonment if your travel is affected by a volcanic ash cloud.
- On Gold and Platinum cover add Volcanic Ash Cover and Emergency Travel Upgrade - covering you for all of the above, and also covering you up to a valuable £1,500 per person (up to a total of £4,000 per policy) for alternative transportation or accommodation costs, if you are prevented from returning home due to an unforeseen reason - including volcanic ash cloud as well as strikes or major weather disruption.

Will I be covered in the event of strikes or industrial action?
Your policy provides cover under the Travel Delay section of your policy wording, if your outward or return journey is delayed for more than 12 hours as a result of strikes or industrial action, provided that when the policy was purchased (or when the trip was purchased - whichever is the later) there was no reasonable expectation that this would affect your trip.
If the delay continues for more than 24 hours on your outbound flight, sea crossing, coach or train departure, you can abandon your trip and claim under the Cancellation section of your policy (an excess is applicable - see your policy schedule for details of the maximum policy benefit and excess amount). For greater levels of protection, you can also add the Volcanic Ash & Emergency Travel Upgrade to Gold policies, this provides cover should you be prevented from returning home as a result of an unforeseen strike and will provide up to £1,500 per person (up to a total of £4,000 per policy) for alternative transportation or accommodation costs,
I'm travelling to Cuba, what travel insurance cover do I need?

From 1 May 2010 all travellers - including Cubans living abroad - are required to hold comprehensive travel insurance including medical insurance before travelling to Cuba. You will be expected to present a copy of your insurance on arrival in Cuba. Insurance should be valid for the full duration of your stay in Cuba and should cover medical repatriation. You should check any exclusions, and that your policy covers you all for the activities you want to undertake. What is covered in the event of a terrorist attack overseas?
We do not cover acts of terrorism abroad except under the Personal Accident, Emergency Medical Expenses and Repatriation or Hospital Benefit sections of the policy. Terrorism involving the use, release, or threat of release, of nuclear, chemical or biological weapons of mass destruction is not covered.
Emergency and Claims
What do I need to do if a medical emergency happens abroad?
Contact the assistance service immediately - click here for contact details (they are also contained in your policy wording & schedule, which we advise you take with you on your trip).
The assistance service can confirm whether costs will be covered, liaise directly with hospitals on your behalf regarding medical arrangements and payment of bills and arrange specialist travel arrangements if medically required.
What do I do if my property / passport / tickets is lost or stolen abroad?
Please refer to your policy schedule to see whether cover for Cash and Documents and Loss of Passport Expenses are included. Report your loss to the police and obtain a written police report.
If these are covered on your policy, and in the event that you lose cash or it is stolen, keep proof of how you coped financially after the loss (e.g. exchange/withdrawal slips, bank/card statements). You will also need to be able to provide evidence of the original cash withdrawal. Please see the full Policy Wording here for terms and conditions applicable to loss of cash and documents.
In the event you lose your passport or it is stolen, you may be covered for the cost of an emergency replacement passport, and any reasonable travel and accommodation expenses over and above the payment you would normally have made during your trip had the loss not occurred. Again, keep all extra receipts for the costs and refer to the full Policy Wording here for terms and conditions applicable.
How do I make a claim?

- Submit your claim within 28 days of returning home. (In certain cases you may wish to claim whilst still travelling - this is possible but you must still adhere to the usual claims requirements)
- Keep copies of your completed claim form and all supporting documentation
- Keep any damaged items - they may be required for assessment
For Emergency Medical Expenses claims: You must call the assistance service to confirm whether costs will be covered. They can liaise directly with hospitals on your behalf and arrange specialist travel arrangements if a medically required. Keep all receipts and medical reports.
For Baggage claims: You must obtain police report within 48 hours of any loss, burglary or theft. Keep any damaged items. For items which cost more than £50 you will need to provide a receipt as proof of purchase. If baggage is lost or delayed in transit, notify the carrier immediately and obtain a written carriers report (in the case of airlines this is called a Property Irregularity Report).
For Curtailment claims: Call the assistance service immediately if you need to return early for an insured reason.
For Legal Expenses claims: If you claim for Legal Expenses in the event of a death or personal injury, it may be advantageous to seek legal advice whilst still travelling. Contact details for legal claims are on the reverse of your policy schedule.

What is the maximum age you cover on single trip or annual multi trip policies?
Columbus Direct can insure customers up to 85 on Single Trip policies and 75 for Annual Multi Trip policies.

We offer Bronze, Silver or Gold levels of cover, but please note that if you are aged 80 or over and planning to travel for 31 days or more, then only Gold cover is available for trips of this duration.
Should I buy a Couple policy, or insure both of us as Individuals?
If you are married, in a civil partnership or are co-habiting with your partner, please select 'Couple' cover. Otherwise select Individual if It's just you on the policy, or 'Group' to insure more than 1 traveller.
My children are over 18 - can I still buy a Family policy
Children aged 18-22 and in full time education can be included in Family policies.
On an Annual policy - just select group type 'Family' and add them under the age group 'Children (18 - 22)'. Under this policy, they would be free to travel with you and also independently under your policy.
For single trip policies, again select Family group type and enter them as 'Children (18-22)' - they will then be covered for travel with you on a single trip.
What is an excess?
An excess is the amount deducted from the claim payment, and applies to each person for each section of cover you claim under. The excesses are listed on your policy schedule.
Can I waive or increase my policy excess?
Yes, you can include an Excess Waiver option when purchasing either a Silver or Gold policy. When obtaining a quote online, scroll down on the 'Choose a policy' page, and you can add this option under the 'Customise your cover' section. Please note that this option is not available on Bronze policies.
When should I start my Annual Multi Trip Policy?
With Annual Multi Trip policies, cover for cancellation commences on the date entered as the start date of the policy. If you have paid for any part of a trip, set the start date as today to ensure your cancellation cover begins right away. This doesn't affect your cooling off period - you have 14 days to cancel your policy should you decide you don't want to keep it, provided no claims have been made.
Can my family travel separately on an Annual Multi Trip policy?
Yes, all family members can travel separately - including children. Trips within the UK are also covered on Annual policies where at least two nights will be spent in pre-booked accommodation.
Are the policy benefits per person / per claim?
The maximum benefits stated on your policy are the amount you can claim up to per person, per policy - so with an Annual policy, the limit is per person per year.
For example, if you have a couple policy and have £1,500 of Baggage cover, each person is covered for this amount, giving you up to £3,000 of cover for baggage.
Children are covered up to 50% of the stated benefits.
Can I cover a child to travel on their own policy?
Unfortunately, children cannot be insured under their own single trip policy online. In certain circumstances, if they are travelling on a school trip or accompanied by an adult, children can be covered on their own policy if purchasing via the call centre - please call us to speak to a member of our team to discuss your requirements on 0845 888 8893. If you have an Annual Multi Trip policy, children can travel independently under your family cover.
Can I be covered if I no longer live in the UK?
Columbus Direct travel insurance policies are available to purchase in over 45 countries worldwide. Policy terms, benefits and rates differ between country and region so it is important that you select the correct Country of Residence before getting your quote (note that you should select the country in which you have resided for the last 6 months).

Will I be covered for working abroad?
Manual labour of any kind is not covered - e.g. fruit picking, building. This means that if you have an accident whilst participating in manual labour, you would not be covered for any medical costs or repatriation. We strongly advise anyone planning to do manual work abroad to ensure they have alternative cover in place to cover you whilst you are in the workplace. However, if you plan to do any non-manual work you will be covered under the terms of your policy, with the exception of Personal Liability cover - this section of your policy will not apply whilst you are working, therefore please check that you have an alternative in place with your employer's own liability insurance to cover you whilst in the workplace.
Does your policy cover camping holidays?
Yes. Motoring, camping and self-catering holidays are included. If you were to miss a ferry or it was cancelled because of strike or bad weather you would be able to claim under your policy. Equally if your luggage were stolen or damaged there should be a valid claim and the other sections of your policy also apply. Camping equipment can be expensive so make sure you have enough insurance cover.
Your policy benefits
If I'm delayed, what is covered?
If your outward or return journey is delayed for more than 12 hours, you will be covered to claim up to the amounts specified on your policy schedule if It's caused by one of the following:
- Adverse weather conditions
- Mechanical breakdown of the aircraft, coach, train or sea vessel
- Vehicle breakdown
- Unforeseen strike, industrial action, security alert (see policy wording for full details)
If you abandon your journey after 24 hours delay, you can claim under the Cancellation section of your policy (an excess will apply). You can also claim for abandonment if your vehicle is involved in an accident or suffers mechanical breakdown en route to your departure point.
In the event of delay, you will need to obtain proof from the public transport company confirming the duration of, and reason for the delay, and if your vehicle breaks down you will need to obtain a police or roadside assistance report.
What can I claim for any one item of baggage?
Different policies have differing single article limits, and a total limit may be applicable to all valuable items such as jewellery and cameras. Details of these limits can be found on your policy schedule. When you get a quote for travel insurance online, you can view the baggage limits for each policy on the 'Choose a policy' screen. Scroll down to the bottom of the policy table and click 'Show full summary' at the bottom of the column.
Can I add cover for a Laptop?
Cover is available for business items such as laptops up to a total of £1,000 with our Executive policies, available as Annual Multi Trip cover only. You can obtain a quote for Executive cover here. To add your laptop's details, enter the make, model and value in the 'Business Equipment' section underneath where you fill in your name and address details on step 3 of the quote process. Alternatively, laptops can usually be covered away from home under home contents insurance policies - please check with your home insurance provider.
Do you cover mobile phones?
Unfortunately, mobile phones are not covered on any of our policies. Specific mobile phone insurance is usually available through your network provider.
Can I remove baggage cover?
The only policy where baggage cover can be removed is Bronze Single Trip. Select the 'Remove Baggage' option box in the 'Customise your cover' section - which appears underneath the list of policy benefits on step 2 of your quote online.
What is Scheduled Airline Failure Insurance?

If I had to cancel my trip, what would be covered?
You are covered up to the amount specified on your policy schedule for travel and pre-booked accommodation costs, if you have to cancel your trip for an insured reason. Terms and conditions apply and full information about cancellation claims can be found in the Policy Wording which can be viewed here. Reasons for cancellation may include accidental injury or serious illness of either you, a travelling companion, immediate relative or someone with whom you have arranged to stay, or redundancy.
Are Air Miles covered?
Yes - If you are making a claim for cancellation and your flights have been arranged using Air Miles or other form of redeemable vouchers and these cannot be reinstated by the issuer, you will be reimbursed at the lowest advertised fare by the airline for the flight in question.

If I'm called up for jury service will I be able to claim for my lost/delayed holiday?
Yes. This is called cancellation cover - and, providing the cancellation was beyond your control - such as compulsory jury service, then, as long as you did not know about the jury service at the time of booking your trip or insurance (whichever is later) you would be eligible to submit a claim. The same cover applies if you were unable to go on holiday because of illness of a member of the party travelling with you or the serious illness or death of a close family member. However, if an urgent business appointment came up that would not qualify for reimbursement.
Policy admin lost docs changes
What documents do I need to take on holiday with me?
You are advised to take your insurance schedule and policy wording with you when you travel. When you buy a policy, your documentation will be sent to you by email straight away, for you to print off at home. Alternatively, you can choose to have your documents sent to you in the post for an additional admin fee. To opt-in to receive documents through the post, tick the box on the payment screen under the heading 'Policy Documentation'.
Will I get my policy documents before I travel?
When you buy a policy online or over the phone, we automatically email your policy documents to you. You can normally expect to receive them within a few minutes. You can opt to receive your documents by post, for which an additional charge is payable - this postal option can be seen on the payment screen when you buy online.
I've lost my documents - how can I obtain replacements?
If you have lost your policy documentation, email our customer services team at firstname.lastname@example.org to request a replacement copy, which will then be emailed to you.
Can I add sports and activities to my policy after purchase?
Yes, you will usually be able to add sports and activities to your policy if you are not already on your trip. Call our customer services team on 0845 888 8893 who will be happy to help.
Can I declare a medical condition after purchase?
If, at the time of buying this insurance you have a medical condition, this can be declared to us after you purchase the policy. You will have no cover for claims arising due to this condition until it has been declared to, and accepted by, us.
If your health changes after you purchased the insurance, you must contact us as soon as possible to notify us of your change in health. You may be required to pay an additional premium to continue to have full cover. If we cannot cover the condition you will be advised of your options.

How do I cancel my policy?
There is a 14 day cooling off period from the date you receive your policy documentation during which you can cancel your policy and receive a full refund, provided no claims have been made. If you have purchased single trip cover and the start date of your policy is within 14 days of the date of purchase, you can cancel your policy before the start date and receive a full refund. For cancellations, please email email@example.com.
What happens when my Annual policy is due for renewal?
When your policy is due for renewal, we may offer to renew your policy automatically - this avoids the risk of travelling uninsured. We will write to you before your policy expires with full details of your following year's premium and policy conditions. You can contact us at any time to cancel the automatic renewal of your policy. Full details of this procedure can be found on page 19 of the policy wording, which can be viewed here.
How do I add cover for a pre-existing medical condition online?
Cover is available for many pre-existing medical conditions subject to screening. You can click to add conditions under where you enter the names and dates of birth for the people on your policy. You will then be guided through a series of questions, at the end of which you will find out whether your condition can be covered, and whether any extra cost will apply.
What am I covered for if my condition is declined?
If your medical condition is declined, you will still be able to buy travel insurance - however, if you have any claims which arise either directly or indirectly as a result of the declined condition, it will not be covered.
I'm taking prescription medication abroad, will this be covered if it is lost or I run out?
If you will need to take medication with you on your trip, It's always advisable to travel with enough medication for your trip as our policy will not cover loss of medication which, at the time of departure is known to be required or continued outside the UK. There is also no cover for loss, destruction, damage or theft of any prescribed medication, whether this was prescribed before or after the start of your trip.
Is pregnancy covered?
Yes, you will be covered for reasonable emergency medical expenses for complications in pregnancy, provided you have not had any complications with this or any previous pregnancy.
Cover for cancellation or curtailment of a trip is also covered under certain circumstances. Please refer to the policy wording here for full terms and conditions.
Please note that a complication in pregnancy is considered to be assisted pregnancy, multiple birth, more than one previous miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, pre-eclampsia, abnormal foetal development, uterine or placental abnormality, pregnancy related surgical procedure, termination for medical reasons, birth prior to 36th week of pregnancy or any pregnancy induced condition (e.g. diabetes or hypertension).
Is dental cover provided?

What is considered a pre-existing medical condition?
Any medical condition, which has been suffered or under investigation or review (routine or otherwise), or for which medication, advice or treatment has been received within the past 12 months (prior to the date your policy is issued or the date the trip is booked - whichever is later). This includes longstanding conditions, surgery (including any elective procedures), as well as injuries that may be exacerbated by the activity/trip you propose to undertake and pregnancy where there have been complications in pregnancy with this or a previous pregnancy.
A complication in pregnancy is considered to be: assisted pregnancy, multiple birth, more than one previous miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, pre-eclampsia, abnormal foetal development, uterine or placental abnormality, pregnancy related surgical procedure, termination for medical reasons, birth prior to 36th week of pregnancy or any pregnancy induced condition (e.g. diabetes or hypertension).

Am I covered for pre-existing medical conditions?
Pre-existing medical conditions are not covered unless they are declared to us, agreed by us on your insurance schedule and an extra premium paid (if required). We offer cover for many medical conditions subject to screening - which can be completed online when you get a quote.
If I need to cancel a trip because someone on whom my trip depends is ill, am I covered?
You are covered under the terms of your policy for cancellation as a result of an accidental injury, serious illness or death of any person with whom you are intending to travel or stay, an immediate relative of yours or a close business associate of yours.
Please note that an immediate relative is considered to be a mother, father, sister, brother, wife, husband, fiancé(e), common-law partner, civil law partner, co-habiting partner (same or different sex), your children (including fostered), grandparent, grandchild, parent-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, step-parent, step-child, step-brother, step-sister or legal guardian.
A close business associate is any person whose absence from business for one or more complete days at the same time as your absence prevents the effective continuation of that business.

What is an EHIC and should I get one?
EHIC stands for European Health Insurance Card and it replaced the old E111 card in 2006.
An EHIC lets you get state healthcare at a reduced cost or sometimes for free. It will cover you for treatment that is needed to allow you to continue your stay until your planned return. It also covers you for treatment of pre-existing medical conditions and for routine maternity care, as long as you're not going abroad to give birth.
It is important to note that EHIC will NOT cover any private medical healthcare or costs such as mountain rescue in ski resorts, being flown back to the UK, or lost or stolen property.
The EHIC is therefore not an alternative to travel insurance but it should be used alongside a travel insurance policy.
If you use your EHIC while travelling but still need to make a claim, Columbus will waive the excess (saving you a minimum of £60) on your claim.
The EHIC is valid in all European Economic Area (EEA) countries, including Switzerland.

Is there a limit to the number of days I can ski?
Single Trip policies cover you for the duration of your trip - up to 60 days.
Annual Multi Trip policies provide up to either 11 or 24 days worth of ski cover, depending on the option selected - this option can be found on step 2 of your quote, underneath the table of policy benefits in the section titled 'Customise your cover'.
Can I ski or snowboard off-piste?
Yes, when you add Winter Sports to your policy, you are covered for both on and off piste skiing and snowboarding. If you go off-piste, you must be within resort boundaries or with a qualified guide.
What is 'walking at high altitude' and do I need to add it to my policy?
If you plan to participate in a walk at an altitude of 2,000 metres (6,500 feet) or above, you will need to add cover for 'walking at high altitude'. This option adds an extra cost to your policy, but will ensure you are covered for high altitude treks.
This option is suitable if you are planning to trek Machu Picchu, Mount Kinabalu etc.
Is my sports gear (e.g. golf clubs, scuba equipment) covered?
Sports equipment is not covered as part of a standard policy, but can be added as an optional extra for an insured sport for an additional cost (excludes cover whilst in use). It's not possible at present to add cover for sports equipment when you buy online, however, this additional cover is available to add to your policy via our call centre. How can I add cover for more sports and activities?

What's covered on a Winter Sports policy?
The following activities are covered as standard in all our winter sports policies:
- Air boarding
- Big foot skiing
- Blade skating
- Cross country/Nordic skiing
- Dry slope skiing
- Glacier skiing
- Husky dog sledding (organised, non-competitive with local driver)
- Ice skating
- Ice windsurfing*
- Kick sledging
- Ski - blading
- Ski boarding
- Skiing on piste
- Skiing - alpine
- Skiing - mono
- Skiing - off piste (but within the resort boundaries)
- Sledging/sleigh riding as a passenger (pulled by horse or reindeer)*
- Snow blading
- Snowboarding on piste
- Snowboarding - off piste (but within the resort boundaries)
- Snowmobiling (with instructor/guide)*
- Snow shoe walking
- Snow tubing
- Training/racing (ski school)
A piste is a recognised and marked ski run within the resort boundaries.
No cover for Personal liability for those sports or activities marked with *
You are not covered when engaging in organised competitions (other than as part of ski school instruction) or when skiing/snowboarding against local authoritative warning or advice.
Other more hazardous snow-bound sports can be added to supplement your Winter Sports policy by choosing from the sports and activities list on the first page when you get a quote online (e.g. heliskiing).
Will I be covered to play in a tournament?
You are covered to play in any sport or activity declared to and accepted by us, and shown on your insurance schedule, and additional premium paid if required. You will also be covered for over 80 sports free of charge with your policy - these free activities are listed under General Conditions in the policy wording, which you can view online here. This cover includes participating in these sports or activities in an amateur tournament, but you will not be covered to participate if it is on a professional basis.
Do Egypt / Israel / Morocco / Russia fall under Europe?
Purchase European cover for trips to Egypt , Tunisia and Morocco. Purchase Worldwide cover for trips to Israel or to Russia. When you obtain a quote online, please check the information point (letter i in blue circle - ) next to the destination box for full information about which countries are covered within each region - this includes up to date information about countries where no cover can be provided (i.e. those countries where the Foreign and Commonwealth Office recommend against travel).
Am I still covered if I'm travelling to more than one country?
Single Trip policies: When you get a quote online, you will be asked to choose your destination from a drop down list on the first page of the quote. If you are travelling to more than one country, select 'Yes' to the question 'Are you going to more than one country?' above the destination box - this will allow you to choose from broader geographical regions, e.g. Europe or Worldwide.
Annual Multi Trip policies: Please select the geographical region which encompasses all of your planned trips when obtaining a quote online. If at any point during the year you plan a trip which falls outside the regions stated on your policy - please contact us to ask about amending your policy.
All policies - Please note that you are only covered for travel in the geographical region stated on your policy schedule. Cover is extended for stop-overs forming part of your outbound or inbound journey up to a maximum of 48 hours and for day trips outside your stated geographical region.
Am I covered to go on a cruise?
Yes, you can be covered whilst travelling by cruise under the terms of your policy.
You will need to select one of the cruise options on the first page when you get a quote online. To do this, select 'Yes' to the question 'Are you going to more than one country?'. Then please choose from either 'European Cruise' or 'World Cruise'.
If you are travelling on a UK only cruise, this cover is only available via our call centre - please call us for a quote on 0845 888 8893.
Please note that for Mediterranean cruises, Turkey, Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt are covered under 'European Cruise' along with all EU countries, however, if your cruise includes Israel requires you to select 'World Cruise' as the destination.
Which countries are not covered?
These changes are dependent upon the latest advice from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). Up to date information on which counties are excluded can be found in the information point (letter i in blue circle) next to the destination box when you get a quote. Can I buy cover for a trip in the UK?
Yes, cover for a UK trip is available via our call centre - call us today on 0845 888 8893. In addition to Single Trip cover via our call centre, if you buy an Annual Multi Trip policy online, you will be covered for UK trips where you plan to stay for at least two nights in pre-booked accommodation.
