What types of family travel insurance can you get?

There are several options to choose from when you get travel cover for you and your family, and you can tailor it to suit your needs.

You can get either a single trip or annual multi trip policy, depending upon your travel plans for the year. If you intend to take just the one holiday, then the single trip insurance may well work out cheaper.

Alternatively, annual cover will provide protection for multiple holidays throughout the year, offering great value for money if you intend to take at least a couple of trips.

We offer family travel insurance to suit all families and their needs, whether you are two parents with three children planning to relax by the pool, or a single parent with one child looking for an adventure-filled trip.

You can also choose between Europe and Worldwide cover depending on where you plan to travel, or you can also get a Worldwide Policy that excludes USA, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

Does family travel insurance cover individuals?

If you get an annual multi-trip policy for your family, you can travel multiple times throughout the year without having to get separate policies.

This also means that your children would continue to be insured, even if they go on holiday without you. If they go on a trip with a friend and their family, or another one of your own family members, you can relax safe in the knowledge that they are protected if anything happens.

The cover also means that you can travel without your children, for both business and leisure, and remain protected under the policy.

Can you get family travel insurance with children over 18? 

A family travel insurance policy usually includes children up to 18-years-old, but parents can also include children up to 22-years-old if they are still in full-time education.

This means that you can continue to benefit from travel cover with Columbus even as your kids get older, and any children travelling away with friends while at university will remain covered under the policy.

Do I need to include pre-existing medical conditions? 

If you are booking a travel insurance policy, then you should declare any pre-existing medical conditions that you are aware of when getting your cover.

If you don’t let us know about your conditions, then you may not be covered if you experience a related medical problem while on holiday.

When applying for a policy online you will be able to enter any medical conditions that you have in your family and then you just have to answer a few questions as part of our medical screening. We will then be able to determine whether we can provide you with the cover that you need. Often, we can include cover for conditions for free, but in some cases, you may be required to pay extra premiums. There could also be instances where we are unable to provide you with the medical cover that you need.

If we can confirm that you’re eligible for cover, then your family will have access to our usual benefits on the standard policy.

When should I get travel insurance?

The date that you should start your travel insurance policy depends on the type of policy you’re getting and whether you have booked your trip

If you are getting annual multi trip cover and have already booked your holiday, you should look to have an immediate start date. This is so that you can be sure your cancellation cover begins straight away, and you would then be protected if anything happens that leads to your flight being cancelled. You would then be protected for any other trips booked between the start date and the end of the one-year period.

If you are getting a single trip policy, cancellation cover starts from the date of issue of the policy documentation and it ends on commencement of the planned trip. You are then covered for the entirety of your trip until you land back in your home country.
