Frequently asked questions

What information do I need to have in order to purchase an insurance plan online?
Before purchasing, please have the following information handy: 1. Personal information for all travelers who will be insured, including dates of birth. 2. Trip details, including dates of travel, destination, travel companies you will be using, total trip cost and how that cost is broken down per person in your itinerary.

Can I get travel insurance if I am not on a cruise or a tour?
Yes. The travel insurance plans provided through Travel Guard that we offer can provide coverage for a variety of travel plans.

What is deposit date?
Deposit date is the day on which you make your first payment toward the trip.

What is final payment date?
Final payment date is the day on which you finished paying for your trip. Both deposit date and final payment dates can be the same if you are buying a package or paying for your trip on the same date. The deposit date cannot be in the future; however, the dates can be the same day you pay for your insurance plan.

When is it too late to buy travel insurance?
The insurance plan may be purchased up to 24 hours prior to trip departure date.

Why do I need to break down trip costs per person in my itinerary?
Claims are paid per person up to the total trip cost or maximum coverage limit. You should divide the cost of the trip per person according to what each person paid. If tickets are paid for by one member of your group, that person should be assigned the cost. If a particular trip cost includes all travelers, then that cost can be divided among those members equally.

Does Travel Guard offer travel insurance plans tailored to specific types of travel?

Why should a traveler buy travel insurance?
Travel insurance can provide coverage due to unforeseen events, from a cancelled flight to a serious illness—or in some plans, even an act of terrorism or the financial default of a travel supplier. If an illness, accident, or other covered unforeseen circumstance forces a traveler to cancel or interrupt their travel plans, they face two potentially major financial losses—money invested in nonrefundable pre-payments and/or medical expenses that in some instances may not be covered by their health insurance plan.

Can I purchase a policy using a Mac?
Yes you can. You can even purchase a plan using an iPad.

If I use frequent flyer miles to purchase a ticket, do I include the regular cost of the ticket as part of my trip cost?
Please be careful when using frequent flyer miles to calculate your trip cost. Travel insurance typically covers the cash value of non-refundable travel expenses. In other words, money you can’t get back from your airline or other travel provider. Frequent flyer miles are not typically coverable as it’s difficult to determine their cash value.

Can I put non-family members on my plan?

Yes. Coverage extends to anyone who is listed on the enrollment form and for whom plan cost has been paid.

What product should I choose if I only want emergency medical coverage?

We recommend MedEvac.

Is there a plan I can purchase without medical coverage?

All plans include medical expense coverage.

How much does a travel insurance plan cost?

The cost of a travel insurance plan is based, in most cases, on the value of the trip, the age of the traveler and number of days traveling.

Is the financial default of an airline, cruise line or tour operator covered?

The Gold plan provides coverage due to financial default if the plan is purchased within 15 days of making the initial trip deposit.

What happens if a traveler must cancel their vacation?

Often a traveler will lose nonrefundable deposits and prepayments that can add up to hundreds—or even thousands—of dollars. A comprehensive travel insurance plan through Travel Guard can provide trip cancellation coverage for the traveler's vacation investment—the insurance company reimburses the traveler for all pre-paid, nonrefundable expenses due to a covered loss.

What other coverages are typically included in a Travel Guard travel insurance plan?

In addition to trip cancellation and interruption, the more comprehensive travel insurance plans available today may also cover travel delay, emergency medical expenses, emergency evacuation, when ordered by a doctor, to the nearest adequate medical facility, coverage for lost, damaged, or delayed baggage and personal effects, and more.
