Coronavirus FAQs - UK customers only

Columbus Direct has been closely monitoring the constantly evolving situation and impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. As we adapt to the changing situation, we have had to adapt our cover during this time. We are continuing to work with our insurers with the aim to improving our policies further. Please see the FAQs below for information on how this applies to your policy.

We continue to recommend that all customers monitor and follow the travel advice provided by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice. The World Health Organization also has a dedicated web presence with up to date information, including travel advice, at www.who.int.

Before you travel 

  • - Cancelling your trip if you fall ill with COVID-19 before you travel, provided you test positive within 14 days of the start of your trip. 
  • - Cancelling your trip if your immediate relative, travelling companion or any person you are intending on staying with falls ill with COVID-19 before you are due to travel, provided they test positive within 14 days of the start of your trip. 

During your trip 

  • - Curtailment if you test positive for COVID-19 at you departure point and are not allowed to go on your trip. 
  • - Missed departure if you show symptoms of COVID-19 at your departure point and miss your flight due to a health check. You would also be covered if you subsequently test negative and incur additional costs to get you to your destination. 
  • - Curtailment if you test positive whilst abroad and are not allowed to continue your trip or are quarantined. 
  • - Emergency medical treatment including getting you home if you fall ill with COVID-19 while travelling.
  • - Cutting short your trip if a close relative falls ill with COVID-19, provided they had not been diagnosed with COVID-19 at the time of travelling.

  • - Medical and Repatriation costs covered for Green and Amber countries if the FCDO has advised against all but essential travel. 
  • - Up to £200 to cover unexpected COVID-19 tests. 
  • - Up to £1,000 towards quarantine accommodation outside your home upon return to the UK or
  • - Cover if you cut short your trip to avoid quarantine accommodation costs before restrictions come into force.

AM I COVERED FOR THE ADDITIONAL COST OF TESTS IF THERE IS A CHANGE IN THE UK TRAFFIC LIGHT STATUS? No Yes, you are covered for the cost of any unexpected tests needed as a result of a change to the Traffic Light Status, as long as the country was not on a watchlist in the 14 days prior to the policy being purchased.
AM I COVERED IF I HAVE TO QUARANTINE OUTSIDE MY HOME ON MY RETURN TO THE UK? No Yes, you are covered for up to £1,000 towards the cost of accommodation away from your home where the UK government unexpectedly mandates quarantine on your return to the UK, as long as the country was not on a watchlist in the 14 days prior to the policy being purchased.
