If I have an EHIC card do I need travel insurance?
Yes! It’s definitely worth getting an EHIC, which entitles you to the same level of state-provided medical care as the residents of the country you are visiting, but beware it won’t cover the cost of repatriation. Given that free medical treatment doesn’t include transport home, travel insurance is essential so check that your policy covers emergency transport home as this cost can quickly add up.
Health services in Europe vary from country to country, so make sure to acquaint yourself with the local procedures in case of a medical emergency.
