Read moreIn short, travel insurance is there to help you out if things go wrong with your travel plans. It helps you get medical treatment if you fall ill or have an accident abroad, and pays your medical bills.
If you lose your baggage, a travel insurance policy will provide you with reimbursement – so you can replace your stuff. And if your passport goes missing,it'll help with that too.
From missed flight connections to losing your ski pass... it can help out with all kinds of scrapes.
But it’s not just there to help while you are away. If you make sure you buy your travel insurance policy well in advance, it offers valuable protection against cancellation of your trip too. For instance, if you can’t travel because you’re ill, or if you have to cancel your trip because your house is burgled just before you go. Travel insurance will help you get your money back on travel and accommodation expenses.
An accident or illness abroad could leave you seriously out of pocket if you don’t have travel insurance cover in place. A travel policy will cover the cost of seeing a doctor or nurse. And if you need to be admitted to hospital, insurance will reimburse the costs for your tests, treatment and medical care. Did you know you could be charged for your bedding or an ambulance? Insurance covers that too! It could save you from bearing the burden of a bill which could easily run into the thousands. Especially in countries known for their high medical bills like the US. Not all insurance policies offer the same level of cover and it is therefore important that you check the insurance meets your needs.
A good travel insurance policy can also provide some practical assistance while you’re away. With a policy from Columbus Direct, you have access to Emergency Medical Assistance 24 hours a day. Our multi-lingual team are on call to help you find a local doctor or hospital, as well liaise with medical staff on your behalf. ‘Comprehensive’ is a term that’s common within the insurance world. But no insurance policies can truly be comprehensive - all come with their exclusions. We offer a range of policies which can be tailored to your needs, meaning you don’t need to pay extra for cover you don’t need.
Travel insurance won’t cover costs you can recover elsewhere – for example, if your airline cancel your flight, they should provide you with a full refund or offer to book you onto an alternative flight.
Cover for pre-existing medical conditions isn’t automatically covered on most travel insurance policies. When purchasing insurance with Columbus, you’ll need to complete [an industry standard] medical questionnaire. The secure form will only take a few minutes to complete, and your cover could be secured at the end.
Most people wouldn’t consider leaving their mobile phone at home – it’s your city guide, translation service and in-flight entertainment all rolled into one. But cover for your gadgets, tablets and laptops aren’t included in your policy as standard, as many people have cover elsewhere. If you haven’t got cover for them through contents insurance or any other means, you can add Gadget cover as an extra add-on with your Columbus policy if you need to.
Columbus Direct provides cover to over 150 sports and activities as standard. However, if your activity is not listed then you might need to add our Adventure Sports cover, or give us a call. If you’ll be skiing or snowboarding, then you’ll definitely need Winter Sports cover. This will cover any emergency medical expenses, as well as useful extras like for your ski kit and piste closure.
If your policy includes Missed Departure, you’ll be covered for missed connections if your flight, coach, train or sea crossing is cancelled or delayed for more than three hours. We’ll cover the cost to either get you to your destination, or to join the next step in your pre-booked journey. If you’re embarking on a Cruise, you’ll need to add Cruise cover to your policy to cover any missed cruise ship connections.
We can cover trips up to 6 months on our Gold, Silver and Bronze policies. And if you’re lucky enough to be travelling the world for up to 12 months, simply select ‘Backpacker’ when getting a quote online, then enter your travel dates.
It’s a common misconception that these will cover you for a 12 month round the world trip. Annual Multi Trip policies are designed for travellers who plan to take two or more trips per year and could save you money, but be aware that there’s a maximum number of days you can spend away from the UK per trip (although no cap on how many times you can travel per year) 45 days per trip is standard with our Silver and Gold policies, although up to 60 days per trip can be added for a small extra fee. Bronze comes with 30 days per trip as Standard and can be upgraded to 45 days.
If you’ve paid anything towards your trip, it’s a good idea to get your travel insurance sorted right away. You’ll be able to claim for cancellation costs to recoup money if you can’t travel for an insured reason – falling ill for example.
It’s easy to rely on having all your documents available online, but some countries will need you to produce printed travel insurance documentation – for instance some hospitals may require this, and for border entry to Cuba it is mandatory. So it’s worth printing yours before you go.
If you’re going on a Mediterranean holiday, you’ll be pleased to know it costs the same to cover a trip to the Pyramids as it does a trip to Majorca with Columbus. However, you’ll need to select Worldwide cover if you’re travelling to Israel, Jordan, Lebanon or Algeria.
If the Foreign and Commonwealth Office advise against travel to a specific country or region, we won’t be able to cover you if you travel there. This is typically warzones or places with civil unrest, but if in doubt, check with the Foreign Travel Advice page on the FCO’s website (link is https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice)
That’s no problem at all. Don’t forget to double check your date of birth when booking - incorrect information about your age could invalidate any claims you might need to make.
Not a problem. You’re welcome to buy single or annual policies – now all you need is to find your passport and book that holiday.
We can cover you to travel if you’re aged up to 85 inclusive for single trips, and up to 74 inclusive on an Annual Multi-trip policy. If you’re over 85 and need cover for an upcoming trip, our partner Goodtogoinsurance.com will be able to help. They don’t have an upper age limit and offer medical screening to find cover for pre-existing medical conditions. Click here to visit their site or give them a call on 0330 024 4478.
Even the youngest children need to be protected, so please remember to include them on your family policy. Please remember that children cannot be insured under their own single trip policy if you’re booking online. In certain circumstances, such as travelling on a school trip or when they’re accompanied by an adult, children can have their own policy if you buy it via our call centre. Please call us on 0800 068 0060 and we’ll be happy to discuss your requirements.
Yes, we will. You can find out more about our pre-existing medical cover here, or call 0800 068 0060 and speak to a member of our call centre. We accept hundreds of conditions, including diabetes, autism, a range of cancers, back pain, Alzheimer's, anxiety and dementia.
If you need our help, our Claims team will guide you through making your claim. Here’s what to do, at a glance:

At the airport - If you’re delayed more than 12 hours, get written confirmation of the length of delay from the airline and keep receipts for any emergency purchases you need to make. If your things are lost or damaged, ask the airline for a Property Irregularity Report.
When you’re back – Check your policy wording to see what’s covered, then call or email our Claims Team within 28 days (details here) We can settle travel delay and emergency medical expenses claims up to £350 over the phone. See our checklist of what documents to have to hand here.
